يعد هذا الكتاب الذي يقدمه المؤلف إلى المكتبة العربية أهم كتاب عربي في الحساب لأنه يقيم الدليل على أن الأقليدسي الدمشقي وضع سنة 953م الكسور العشرية.
كما أن ما يميز هذا الكتاب أنه أقدم كتاب وصل إلينا عن الحساب الهندي وهو يعلمنا ما لم نكن نعلم عن هذا الحساب كيف كان عندما وصل إلى العرب، ثم هو ينطوي على أفكار وطرق لا نجدها في كتاب غيره، ولذا فستكون موضع إهتمام عند كل من يعنى بتطور الفكرة الرياضية.
وعليه، يعرض الكتاب في الفصل الأول من حساب التخت ما يزعم مؤلفه أنه يضم ما في الكتب السابقة، ثم هو في الفصل الثاني يعرض المادة على مستوى أعلى وبزعم أنه بذلك ينقل على الحساب الهندي كل ما في حساب اليد وحساب المنجمين، ثم هو في الفصل الأخير يقترح تعديلاً للحساب الهندي نفسه يستغنى به عن التخت.
