الإنسان ليس عقلاً؛ بل هو جسد يجمع بين العقل والنفس؛ فالإنسان لا يقوده عقله قيادة سيطرة وإحكام بل تقوده نفسه (قيادة سيطرة وإحكام) هذه الحقيقة هي التي يحاول المؤلف إبرازها والتحدث عنها في هذا الكتاب التي تتمحور حول ضرورة التميز بين العقل والنفس، وإظهار حقيقته، فالمؤلف يرى أن لهذا التميز أثره الكبير في فهم الإنسان في أبعاده المختلفة والتعرف على مصدر ودوافع أفعاله وموجهات سلوكه للحكم على ما يجري في الواقع الإنساني من أحداث ووقائع بفعل الإنسان ومعرفة ما يمكن نسبته منها إلى حكمة العقل وما يمكن نسبته منها إلى دوافع الإرادة وهي النفس، ذلك أن التميز بين العقل والنفس يتيح للإنسان معرفة ما هو عقلي مما هو نفسي، كما يفتح آفاق جديدة لدراسة الإنسان ومعرفة حقيقة أحكامه وأفعاله، وتميز الأمراض العقلية من النفسية، لتبين الفوارق بينها.
كثيراً ما يثار التساؤل ويشتد النقاش ويطول الجدل حول حقيقة دوافع تصرف الإنسان وسلوكياته في كافة مظاهرها وأبعادها، هل يتصرف الإنسان تصرف وفقاً لمنطلقات وحسابات ترسمها وتدفعها قوى عقلية أم يخضع لدوافع الإرادة المتمثلة في النفس؟
إن هذا التساؤل وما يتشعب عنه من تساؤلات أخرى هو محور اهتمام هذا الكتاب الذي يقدم معالجة منهجية لهذا الموضوع قوامها التحليل المتعمق والأسلوب المبسط. فهو يسعى لمحاولة تأكيد التمييز بين العقل والنفس وإظهار حقيقته، وهذا له أثره الكبير في فهم الإنسان في أبعاده المختلفة والتعرف على مصدر دوافع أفعاله وموجهات سلوكه والحكم على ما يجري في الواقع الإنساني من أحداث ووقائع بفعل الإنسان ومعرفة ما يمكن نسبته إلى حكمة العقل وما يمكن نسبته إلى دوافع الإرادة المتمثلة في النفس.
إن الفائدة المرجاة في مضمون هذا الكتاب لا تقتصر على ما يقدمه من دراسة تحليلية لفلسفة علم النفس فحسب، بل هي إضافة إلى ذلك تتسع في دلالاتها لتشمل نواح أخرى لعل أهميتها وأبرزها أنه يجعل القارئ يعيش في حركة تفاعل وحوار مع كل القضايا التي أثارها المؤلف في تناوله لهذا الموضوع..
