حين وقفوا أمام قفص الشمبانزي، استرعى القرد المنزوي بعيداً، انتباهه، فوراً.. لم يكن يشارك رفاقه توسلهم الظاهر بالزوار ليلقوا إليهم ما بأيديهم من مآكل أو مكسرات أو حتى مجرد لفافات تبغ.. قال لنفسه "يبدو أن القردة مثلنا لها حالات كآبة أو إحباط."
حاول أن يتابع حركات القردة القريبة من القضبان الأمامية، ولكنه لم يستطع إلا أن يرتد ينظره في كل مة، إلى القرد القصيّ.. كان يبدو كئيباً وهو يجلس منفرداً، ولكنه نهض فجأة ليقترب من بقية القردة ويتوقف، ثم تبدو عليه علامات الحيرة وهو يراقبهم بصمت.. تابعه د. علي باهتمام شديد وهو يحاول أن يتوقع خطوته القادمة، ولكن الوقت مضى ولم تظهر على وجه القرد غير الكآبة حسب ما شعر به د. علي، رغم شمعية الوجه الذي كان يراقبه.. أخيراً قرر الانصراف عنه فما هو إلى قرد في النهاية.. في تلك اللحظة بالضبط حدث ما لم يتوقعه أبداً، فقد انتصب القرد فجأة ووضع يديه خلف ظهره ليبدو بمظهر الرجل المفكر.. فاجأته الحركة كثيراً وأيقن فوراً أنه أمام شمبانزي غير عادي أبداً.. تحرك حس العالم في داخله، فقرر أن يمنحه المزيد من اهتمامه.. شعر وكأنه مقبل على مغامرة كان يتوق لخوضها منذ زمن بعيد رغم أنه لم يكن يعرف ماهيتها!
