منذ النّصف الثاني من تسعينيات القرن الماضي، بات يلحُّ على المؤلف سؤالان: لماذا لا تستطيع الثقافة العربية أن تبتكر نظريّاتها الخاصّة؟ والسؤال الآخر: كيف نقف على بداية التفكير النّظري في الثقافة العربية؟ السؤال الأول أنضجته عنده العلاقة الثقافية بالغرب، على حين أنضجت السؤال الثاني بعض القراءات الاستشراقية، التي حاولت أن تجرّد العقل العربي من أية قدرة على إنتاج النّظريّات، وطعنت في أصالة النّظريّات التي يتداولها الفكر العربي.
وعبر خطوط هذا الكتاب ومساربه، أراد المؤلف أن يضع القارئ في صورة الإجابة عن هذين السؤالين عبر مراجعة: النّظريّة، باعتبارها كتلة فكرية وثقافية وإنسانية، نشأت ضمن إطار الدولة العربية الإسلامية في ظلّ ظروف تاريخية معيّنة، وراحت تتطور حتى العصر الحديث. وفي صلب تلك النشأة، وذاك التطور النظري العام، سعى المؤلف أن ينقل إلى القارئ الكيفية التي تشكلت فيها بداية، وتطور النظرية في الفكر العربي.
إنّ هذا الكتاب ليس دراسة تاريخيّةً مَسْحِيَّةً، بل إنه يضع القارئ أمام قراءة يمكن وصفها بأنها قراءة ثقافيّة لمدوَّنة النّظريّة ضمن الخطاب الثقافي العربي العام، تبدو مسهبة أحياناً، وذات رغبة في الدخول إلى تفاصيل أرشيف التأسيس، حرص فيها المؤلف أن يعيد قراءة تاريخ: المدونة النظرية للخطاب العربي، وفق تصورات ترغب في أن تتجاوز مشكلة الفهم المستقلّ. وأراد مؤلف الكتاب أن يمارس ضرباً من القراءة، لا يكترث بالحدود والحواجز التي تسجن: الظّواهر، والعلوم، والنّظريّات، والأفكار، والأعمال الأدبية، والأنشطة البشرية، وسواها، في داخل أقفاص معزولٌ بعضها عن البعض.
