إن رحلة مع شاعر كالمتني لشاقة ومضنية خصوصاً إذا ما علمنا أن حجم المؤلفات التي كتبت حوله يربو على المئات، إذ كان مدار جدل عنيف بين القديم والحديث وكان الباحثون بين معجب بفنه وساخط عليه.
وعلى الرغم من هذا الحشد الهائل من المؤلفات التي دارت حوله، فقد ظل شعر المتنبي بكراً ومجالاً خصباً لأفلام الباحثين، الذين يرون أن في حياته وشعره وفنه زوايا كثيرة غامضة، تحتاج إلى تسليط الأضواء، لإستجلاء أبعادها، وكشف أسرارها.
وهذا ما امتاز به شعره، وانفرد به عن باقي الشعراء، إذ ما زال في شعر المتنبي عوالم مبهمة، لم يكشف النقاب عن ماهيتها، وهي بحاجة إلى مزيد من الدراسات التي تكشف عن خفاياها، وما غمض منها، لإغناء المكتبة العربية بما تضيفه هذه الدراسات من نظرات جديدة إلى قائمة البحوث المتعلقة بالتراث العربي، الذي ينبعث بتجدد الأساليب والدراسات المعاصرة، المعتمدة على قراءة النصوص قراءة جديدة مستعينة في ذلك بالمناهج الحديثة.
وإذا كان بعض الدارسين يرى أن المتنبي "قد قتل بحثاً - حين درست أغراضه الشعرية، وتناولها الباحثون بالدراسات والتحليل، فإن في شعر المتنبي العظيم أبعاداً وآفاقاً لم يقف عندها دارسوه، ويكمن السبب في ذلك في شعر المتنبي نفسه.
هذا الشعر العظيم المتجدد أبداً مع الزمن، بحيث كلما عاد الدارس إليه رأى فيه أبعاداً، ورأى فيه جديداً.
