يتمثل غرث مازارين الفكري والسياسي في المراسلات الغزيرة التي تناولها مع مساعديه، وكبار رجالات عصره، والملاحظات العديدة التي دوّنها في دفاتره عن مختلف القضايا والأمور، وأيضاً "الدليل" الذي نقلب صفحاته، والذي يعتبر زبدة أفكاره في ممارسة السلطة، كما لقنها لتلميذه المتفوق لويس الرابع عشر. هذه الأوراق التي ملأت سبع مجلدات ضخمة لم تلق ما تستحق من عناية الدارسين والمؤرخين سوى من أمد بسيط.
فالدليل، وبسبب الشهرة الواسعة التي أحرزها، حتى في زمن لويس الرابع عشر، كان يعتبر، بحق عصارة ذلك الذهن الوقاد، الذي كان يجسده مازارين في عمله السياسي، وتعكس تجربته الطويلة في الحكم، ومعرفته العميقة بنفسية الحكام والمحكومين. لذا لم يكن ثمة حاجة للتفتيش عن أوراق مازارين الخاصة لمعرفة ما تتضمنها من فلسفة سياسية، طالما أن خلاصة هذه الفلسفة كانت موجودة في هذا الكتيب البسيط، السهل المنال، المسمى "الدليل".
