يعد كتاب الأمالي لإمام العربية وابن إمامها أبي عبد الله محمد بن العابس بن المغيرة العدوي اليزيدي من احسن المصنفات في بابها، وأنفس الضنائن المختفية برهة من الزمان عن أربابها، فيه يجمع المصنف الكثير من غرر القصائد والمقطوعات الشعرية في المراثي والمدائح وغير ذلك، كما واشتمل على جمل من القصص والأخبار ونبذ كثيرة من طرائف الآثار، ونخب من الحكايات الغريبة، والطرائف العجيبة، وقد أكثر فيه مؤلفه من الرواية عن عمه الفضل بن محمد بن محمد اليزيدي، وغيره، ولم يخله من النصائح والمواعظ والحكم نظماً ونثراً وقد أورد أخباره وحكاياته مسندة إلى مراجعها الأصلية.
