تم في هذا الكتاب تدوين أسماء الكتب والمؤلفات العربية الشهيرة مع ذكر أماكن طبعها وسنة الطبع مع الوقوف على اسم المؤلف وسيره والقرن الذي نبغ فيه، ويمكن القول بأن لهذا الكتاب فوائد عدة، فقد جمع ملخص تاريخ الآداب العربية، ورتب المصنفات الذي ورد ذكرها فيه حسب مواضيعها المتنوعة في كل من المقدمة والأبواب الأربعة، إلى جانب ذلك فقد حوى فهرساً جمع أسماء المصنفات المذكورة فيه مرتبة على حروف الهجاء. بالإضافة إلى فهرس آخر جمع أسماء الأشخاص الواردة فيه مرتبة أيضاً على حروف الهجاء.
ويمكن تحديد ما ذكر الكتاب في مقدمته وأبوابه الأربعة كالتالي: المقدمة جاءت في الأماكن المحفوظة فيها الكتب العربية وفي فهارس الكتب العربية. الباب الأول في اعتناء الإفرنج باللغة العربية والمؤلفات في ذلك، الباب الثاني: في الآداب العربية المنقولة والمسطرة مدة زهدها، أي من قديم الزمان إلى ما بعد سقوط بغداد بقليل، الباب الثالث: تناول مؤلفات زمن قبل النهضة (وهو زمن المقلدين والمجددين) والذي حصره مؤلف الكتاب من قرن (7-12هـ/13-18م) الباب الرابع تناول مؤلفات زمن اليقظة (بعد النهضة).
