قد يتفاجأ البعض من تأليف كتاب عن مهن ترتبط بأشكال تقليدية للتعبير العلمي أو الإبداعي، في زمن طغت عليه الصورة، وبات الإنتاج الفكري يُنشر رقمياً عبر الإنترنت، مما يغيّر آلية النشر وسبل بث المعلومات تغييراً جذرياً.
حيث لم يتراجع إنتاج الكتب المطبوعة مع دخول التقنيات الرقمية وإنتشار إستخدام الإنترنت، وإنما إزداد هذا الإنتاج في العالم؛ أما تلك التقنيات فقد شكلت موضوعاً مركزياً لقسم كبير من المطبوعات (أدلة إستخدام الحاسبات الإلكترونية والبرامج المعلوماتية والإنترنت على سبيل المثال).
وأما إستخدام التقنيات الرقمية فقد سهّل إعادة طبع المؤلفات وفق الطلب؛ مما سمح بتقليص عدد النسخ للطبعة الواحدة، بينما فضّل الناشرون الإكثار من العناوين الجديدة لإثارة إهتمام القراء، كما استفادت صناعة الكتاب وطرق توزيعه من إستخدام التقنيات الرقمية وتقنيات الإتصال تحديداً ولم تهمّش كما توقع البعض.
هذا الكتاب هو محاولة متواضعة لشرح أسس المهن المتعلقة بصناعة الكتاب وتوزيعه وتسويقه، تشدد على ترابط المهن هذه وعلاقتها التكاملية، وتركز على العوامل التي تشجع هذه الصناعة وعلى التحدّيات التي تواجهها من جراء هيمنة المؤسسات النشرية الكبيرة، وتحاول تسليط الضوء على بعض ما نشهده في الأسواق العربية من صعوبات في الممارسات المهنية.
