في هذا الكتاب دراسة ميدانية فريدة في حقلها المتحرك أصلاً (هل هناك علاقة ثابتة، نموذجية، بين التعليم العالي وسوق العمل في بلد ما؟). وفرادتها أنها "طولية"، أي مبنية على استقصاء على فوج من خريجي التعليم العالي بعدد وافر، وإنها تقدم مساهمة معرفية أي تكشف عن أمور غير معروفة لدى المجتمع العلمي، في الموضوع المدروس.
وهذه الأمور تتعلق بأبعاد أساسية للعلاقة بين التعليم العالي وسوق العمل، وهي تتلخص بأسئلة البحثية التالية: أولاً: ما هي فرص العمل التي أتيحت للخريجين (العمل، البطالة، المدة الزمنية، لإيجاد عمل، الخ...)، ثانياً: ما هي القنوات الغالبة للالتحاق بالعمل؟ ثالثاً: ما هي شروط العمل (القطاع، حجم المؤسسة، المنصب، عدد ساعات العمل، طبيعة العمل، البعد عن مكان الإقامة، التقديمات الاجتماعية الخ...؟ رابعاً: ما هو موضع المهنة الممارسة من الاستراتيجية الاجتماعية-المهنة للمتخرجين، امتداداً من الماضي الاجتماعي إلى الرغبات المهنية قبل الجامعة، إلى الجامعة-الاختصاص، إلى المهنة الممارسة، إلى المستقبل؟
خامساً: ما هو مقدرا الرضى عن العمل وشروطه؟ سادساً: ما مقدار الرضى عن الأعداد الجامعي، ومدى ملاءمته والنواقص فيه من زاوية متطلبات المهنية؟ سابعاً: ما هي العوامل المؤثرة على كل من الأمور السابقة، وبالتحديد ما هي أثر عوامل مثل: الجامعة، ميدان الاختصاص، الخلفية الاجتماعية-الاقتصادية، مكان العمل، الجنس، الخ...؟
لا تتبع فصول الكتاب هذا الترتيب، بل هي تنطلق من مراجعة الأدبيات التي سوغت الفرضيات الضمنية أو المعلنة (الفصل الأول)، نحو منهجية العمل (الفصل الثاني)، ثم وصف الخصائص الاجتماعية الاقتصادية للخريجين (الفصل الثالث)، ثم تحليل المسارات الدراسية للخريجين ( الفصل الرابع)، ثم فرص العمل وقنواته وشروطه (الفصل الخامس)، فالاستراتيجيات الاجتماعية (الفصل السادس)، فارضى عن العمل والأعداد الجامعي (الفصل السابع)، وفي كل فصل من الفصول التي تحلل النتائج تجري المقارنة بين المعطيات بحسب المتغيرات المستقلة المختارة.
