يتناول الكتاب دراسة تاريخية في العلاقة بين ظهور الإسلام وتأسيس الدولة العربية الإسلامية الأولى في مرحلة صدر الإسلام (1-60هـ/622-680م). حيث مثلت تلك الفترة بأحداثها المرتكز والمنطلق الأساسي في الفكر والتراث الإسلامي. فيستعرض المؤلف مرحلة ظهور الدعوة الإسلامية وملابسات تكوينها وتطورها في ضوء الفتوحات الإسلامية، وما ارتبط بها ولزم عنها من صراعات سياسية ونقاشات دينية ونزاعات حزبية وتطورات اجتماعية. وهذه الفترة الزمنية هي الممتدة من هجرة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم 622م، وحتى تأسيس وتوطيد وتوريث خلافة بني أمية، أي حتى وفاة معاوية بن أبي سفيان سنة 680م.
