ترجع أهمية هذا الكتاب الذي بين أدينا إلى أنه من أوائل المؤلفات في علم العروض، إذ يعود زمنياً إلى عصر المؤلف-العصر العباسي-وعلى الرغم من كثرة ما كتب في علم العروض، إلا أن ما وصل إلينا يعد قليلاً. لذا فإن كتاباً كهذا يحتل مكانة رائدة ويوضح لنا تطور علم العروض واعتناء السابقين به تأليفاً وتلخيصاً مثل عروض الأخفش "أبي الحسن سعيد بن مسعدة"، وعروض الورقة لأبي نصر إسماعيل بن حماد الجوهري، وغير ذلك كثير مما ذكر في كتب التراجم وضاع معظمه. ويجيء كتاب العروض للربعي كي يعطينا دليلاً على اهتمام القدامى بعلم العروض وتأليف الكتب الكثيرة فيه، بالإضافة إلى ذلك ترجع أهمية هذا الكتاب لكونه من أوائل المخطوطات التي يقسم المؤلف فيها ألفاظ البيت حسب التفاعيل المقرونة، أي تحت كل تفعيلة عروضية ما يقابلها من ألفاظ حسب أصواتها وإيقاعها العروضي. وقد اعتنى المؤلف بالمتلقي فجاء شرحه سهلاً ميسراً، وحاول أن يبسط للمتلقي كيفية التقطيع في أسلوب تربوي يسهّل به العروض ولم يسبقه كتاب في العروض يقوم بهذا الدور التربوي. باستثناء معاصره ابن جني الذي قرن تفاعيل بعض الأبيات بما يوازيها من كلمات.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب وللمكانة الأدبية واللغوية التي يحتلها مصنفه عُني الدكتور "محمد أبو الفضل بدران" بتحقيق نصه وبالتعريف بصاحب المخطوطة، حياته، وأساتذته وعلمه وتلاميذه، ثم تناول آراء الربعي العروضية، وبين منهج التحقيق، أما المتن المحقق فقد قدّمه مع ضبط ما يُشْكل بالشكل، وأثبت في الهامش بعض مشكلات النص بين المتن والحاشية، وقدم شروحاً معجمية موثقة، ثم خرّج الشواهد الشعرية في دواوين الشعراء وكتب المختارات الشعرية القديمة.
