إن علاقة الإنسان بالحيوان قديمة قدم الإنسان نفسه على وجه هذه الأرض. فقد خلق الله عز وجل، الإنسان وخلق الحيوان معه. فكان لا بد من أن يكون هناك تعامل فيما بينهما. وكان هذا التعامل عدائياً في بادئ الأمر، ثم أدرك الإنسان أهمية بعض أصناف الحيوان في تسهيل أمور حياته، فدجّن بعضها واستفاد من لحومها وألبانها، وأوبارها وأصوافها، وبيوضها وجلودها وأرواثها، كما استفاد منها في حروبه وتنقلاته ولهوة وصيده، إلى غير ذلك من شؤون حياته شتى.
واستمرت العلاقة بين الإنسان والحيوان حتى عصرنا الحاضر، مع تطور بارز يتمثل في ترسيخ سيطرة الإنسان على الحيوان، وتعزيز استغلاله له في شتى مجالات الحياة، وخاصة بالنسبة إلى طعامه وشرابه ولهوه. هذه العلاقة المترسخة منذ القدم، والمستمرة حتى اليوم لا بدّ من أن تعزز أدباً وأمثالاً وحكماً تعبر عن التجربة الإنسانية بالحيوان، وظهر كل ذلك في أمثال العرب، وحكمهم، وأقوال فلاسفتهم وشعرائهم وأدبائهم، حتى خصص بعضهم كتباً للحيوان، لعل من أهمها كتاب "الحيوان" للجاحظ، وكتاب "حياة الحيوان الكبرى" اللوميدي.
وهذا الكتاب يضم بين طياته مختارات من أورع ما قيل في الحيوانات من قصائد شعرية أو قصص أو حكايات، كما ويضم الكتاب الآيات القرآنية والأمثال العربية التي دارت حول الحيوانات الدابة على الأرض.
