يحتوي هذا الكتاب على الخلاصة الفنية لبعض مباحث البلاغة التي تاهت بين كتب الأقدمين، فلم ينتفع بها المتعلمون لغلبة الأبحاث الأخرى عليها. ففاضت بين أمواجها وجرفها تيار المنطق، والفلسفة، والأصول والقاعدة النحوية والتفريع والتقسيم، فصارت ركاماً هائلاً ليس فيه إلا النادر القليل من البلاغة وفنها.
فجاء هذا الكتاب لينقيها من شوائب الخلافات، ولينحيها عن أساليب الجدل والمنطق، وليبتعد بها عن التفريع والتقسيم، ويبرزها متناسقة العبارة، دقيقة الألفاظ. والكتاب بشكل عام يتألف من تمهيد وثلاثة فصول. اشتمل التمهيد على معالجة للموضوعات التالية: البلاغة في العصر الجاهلي، النقد في العصر الجاهلي، البلاغة في العصر الإسلامي، النقد في العصر الإسلامي مقدمة لدراسة البلاغة، الأسلوب العلمي والأدبي، اللفظ والمعنى، الفصاحة والبلاغة. أما الفصل الأول فتضمن مباحث دارت حول علم المعاني، الخبر، المجاز الفعلي، التقديم، الإنشاء، أسلوب الأمر، النهي، الاستفهام، التمني، النداء، القصر، الإيجاز والإطناب والمساواة، أما الأسلوب البلاغي من نعت وتوكيد وبدل وعطف فجاءت مادة للفصل الثاني، في حين عقد الفصل الثالث والأخير لخروج الكلام عن مقتضى الظاهر.
