تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تلبية حاجة المكتبة العربية إلى مثل هذه الدراسة الجديدة العلمية التي توخى فيها المؤلف دقة العرض والتحقيق والشمول قدر الإمكان، ثم ضرورة وضع مستند خاص مستقل خاص مستقل عن تاريخ الصحافة العربية كفن من الفنون الأدبية وأقواها أثراً وأخطرها شأناً وأبعدها مدى-هذا إذا صحت نسبة الصحافة إلا الأدب في عصرنا الحاضر، إن لم يكن العكس، باعتبار إن الصحافة هي صانعة الأدب الحديث - لا بد أن في كون الصحافة تمثل "السلطة الرابعة" في الدولة (سلطة الرأي العام) -بعد السلطات التشريعية والتنفيذية والقضائية- لأكبر دليل على عظم مكانتها وعمق نفوذها بين الناس وشدة تأثيرها في المجتمعات.
وهي إلى ذلك من أوسع الفنون الثقافية إحاطة وأسهلها تعبيراً، وأقربها إلى أذهان القراء ومشاعرهم، وأكثرها انتشاراً، حتى غدت اليوم حاجة ملحة لدى كل فرد تقريباً يقبل عليها كما يقبل على الغذاء والدواء!
وإذا ما عدنا لمادة هذه الدراسة نجد أنها تمثل أول دائرة معارف عامة من نوعها من الصحافة العربية، حيث تهتم بتقديم تحليل دقيق لأسرار الصحافة الحديثة كمهنة ومن مع شرحها لدقائقها وأساليبها وفروعها وأعمالها وطرقها واتجاهاتها واستعراضها لتاريخ الصحافة في العالم. كما وتقدم الدراسة عرضاً شاملاً للبذور الصحافية والكتاب الصحافيين في تاريخ الأدب العربي منذ الجاهلية حتى عصر الانحطاط هذا إلى جانب تتبعها لتطور نشأة الصحافة العربية التي صدرت في العالم منذ صدور أول صحيفة عربية إلى اليوم.
