الكتاب هو صيد خاطر ابن الجوزي حيث سجل خواطره التي هي فيض من رحاب الإسلام فقد ذكر مواعظ لطيفة، وإرشادات مهمة، وحذر من مغبة المعاصي وأثرها على القلب وأن لذتها تقضي في لحظة وتبقيك العمر في حسرة، وبين أن المنهج الإسلامي السديد لا يدعو إلى الكسل والبطالة والتسكع والاستجداء، وتكلم عن مداخل إبليس على جهلة الزهاد، وعالج مسألة مهمة وهي: التسليم لحكمة الله تعالى في مخلوقاته، وأكد أن النجاة في التسليم، وبين درجات قوة الإيمان التي تظهر عند الابتلاء والتمحيص والصبر على ما جاء من الله سبحانه. وذكر سر تأخر إجابة الدعاء وأسبابه. وفرق بين علماء الدنيا والآخرة. وشدد على اغتنام الأوقات قبل فواتها. وبحث في العزلة ورغب فيها بعض الأحيان… وتكلم عن الدنيا وأنها لا تخلو من منغصات… إلى غيرها من الأمور التي تحدث عنها والتي تفضي إلى راحة الدنيا والآخرة… إلى جانب ذلك فإن القارئ ومن خلال اطلاعه على الكتاب سيكوّن فكرة واضحة عن العصر الذي عاش فيه المؤلف من خلال قراءة تلك الخواطر.
