هذا الكتاب هو إعادة نظر، إعادة قراءة، رؤية الماضي بعيون جديدة والدخول إلى نص قديم من وجهة نقدية جديدة. وهو كتاب يعتمد على مقدمة أننا نقرأ، فيؤثر فينا ما نقرؤه، ويشبعنا بافتراضاته. إنه محاولة لإضاءة وضع المرأة في الثقافة البطرياركية. ففعل وعيها الأولي هو الإحساس بالضياع. لكن ما هو أسوأ من الضياع هو تشوش الوعي الذي يجعل طبيعة الضياع، بل وحقيقة الضياع نفسها غائمة. إنها، وهي مطوقة بالأساطير والصور والعقائد الجامدة والتعريفات والقوانين والقيود والخوف، مضللة بالاعتقاد بالنظريات المنسوجة حولها، التي تؤبد تبعيتها، وتمنعها من معرفة ما هي محرومة منه. إن شرط حياتها هو العزلة وهو بالضبط شرط "أمير مطرود".
هذا الكتاب هو، إذن، محاولة في تعقب مصير "الأمير المطرود" الضائع في "البرية الذكورية للرواية"، انطلاقاً من حقيقة أن الوعي سلطة، وأن خلق فهم جديد للأدب يعني جعل التأثير الجديد للأدب علينا نحن القراء أمراً ممكناً. ويعني هذا بالمقابل وفير الشروط لتغيير الثقافة التي يعكسها الأدب. فالتساؤل والكشف عن ذلك المركب من الأفكار والأساطير حول النساء والرجال التي توجد في المجتمع وتنعكس في الأدب يعني جعل نظام السلطة المجسد في الأدب عرضة لا للمناقشة حسب وإنما للتغيير أيضاً. ولا يمكن، بالطبع، إنجاز مثل هذا التساؤل والكشف إلا عبر وعي مختلف جذرياً عن الوعي السائد الذي يصوغ الأدب. ولا يمكن اختراق هذا النظام المغلق إلا عبر وجهة نظر ترتاب بقيمه وافتراضاته وتيسر للوعي ما يرغب الأدب في إبقائه مخفياً.
