في عام 1993 أصدر الباحث الأمريكي "صموئيل ب.هنتنغتون" مقاله متضمنة أطروحته حول صدام الحضارات، ومنذ ذلك الحين وحتى اليوم لا تكاد تعثر على نصّ فكري إستراتيجي إلا وفيه هنتنغتون ومقولته، ناهيك عن الردود المنهمرة بلا انقطاع عليهما. ولعل من المفارقات الجديرة بالانتباه في هذا السياق، أن موجة الردود العالمية المنهالة، وخاصة في العالمين الإسلامي والعربي وهذا الملف حافل بنماذج مختلفة عنها. وقد تركزت في كثرتها الساحقة على تناول أو نقد تفاصيل حججه وأفكاره، وقلما عثرنا فيها على نصّ حاول أن يتوقف عند منهج هنتنغتون الحضاري في تفسير التاريخ والتحولات التاريخية سعياً إلى مساجلته والتدقيق في جدواه ومدى صموده في وجه المناهج الأخرى. إلا أن هذه النصوص السجالية المنثورة عشوائياً في الصحف والدوريات المحلية والدولية المتعددة الاختصاص، ما كان لها أن تتشكل نصاباً فكرياً مكتملاً أو متكاملاً في وضعها المتفرق حالياً، ولا أن تكون مرجعاً جامعاً للباحثين والمتابعين... وهذا ما دعا مجموعة مؤلفين إلى إعداد هذا الملف الخاص بصدام الحضارات، وفيه جعلوا أهم الردود النقدية التي جاءت على مقولة "صموئيل هنتنغتون".
وقد اختاروا من النصوص ما اجتهدوا في اعتباره كاشفاً لأوسع مدى مُتاح توصلت إليه من تفاعلها وانفصالها بأطروحة هنتنغتون وتداعياتها الأيديولوجية والسياسية والاستراتيجية والثقافية عربياً وإسلامياً ودولياً، كما وجمعوا فيه نصّ هنتنغتون الأصلي هذا بالإضافة مضمون بعض المقابلات التي أجريت معه.
