إن ممارسة الرياضة لا تقتصر على حالة من الحالات او فئة من الفئات، فقد مارسها الاصحاء والمعاقون، الشباب،والشيوخ، النساء، والرجال وحيث يعد علم الاجتماع الرياضي جزءا من علم الاجتماع العام وهو وثيق الصلة به تبرز الحاجة حينئذ للإلمام بجوانب هذا الموضوع، فقد أبرز هذا الكتاب مراحل تطور علم الاجتماع مينا علاقته بالعلوم الاجتماعية الخرى كعلم النفس، وعلم السياسة وغبرها، كما تطرق الى نظريات علم الاجتماع وتطبقاتها في تربية البدنية والرياضة وتناول العلاقات الاجتماعية وأساليب تنظيمها بشئ من التفصيل، مع بيان دور المؤسسات الاجتماع هذا من حيث علم الاجتماع بشكل عام كذلك يهتم بتوضيح الجوانب المتعلقة بعلم الاجتماع الرياضي، حيث يوضح مفهومه ، وطبيعته، وميادينه، ويذكر مجالات هذا العلم، ثم يتطرق بعدها الى تحليل علم الاجتماع في التربية البدنية والرياضية، مشيرا الى طرائق البحث في علم الاجتماع الرياضي، والى الوظائف الاجتماعية للرياضة، كما ويدرس هذا الكتاب العلاقة بين الرياضة والحضارة والسياسة مبينا مدى هذه العلاقة، ويشير كذلك الى أهمية الاختلافات بين الجنسين في الممارسة الرياضية.
