"القناديل اطمأنت.. وامّحى صوت النجوم. وراء الشاطئ الأخير في الليل، نباح.. وغيوم. مثلما يرقص طيرٌ.. لم يفارق بعدُ روحه هبت النار.. وصاح الشيخ: آ..هْ. كان قد شاخ كثيراً وهو يروي للرباب، كفه والوتر المشدود شابا.. والجريح اللحن شاب. "كان لي حقل.. ودار". يا رباب، فاسقني من صوتك النيلي.. واشرب يا رباب. مرَّ بي العمر قسيماً واستدار، والليالي عبرت بي مثلما مرّ قطار، جرفت داري السيول.. جرفتني. مات أبنائي: خليل.. ونزار ومحمد. لا تُملنَ العنق الزاوي.. رويداً.. يا بناتْ، علنا نمسح عن ذاك الجدار الكلمات. ربما جفّ الدم.. وامحى صوت الجياد النافره. آه. عذراً مات النار وفي الموقد أزهار رماد.. وتطلعنا معاً نحو السماء؛ لا نجوم. آه. وانهلت شرايين الشتاء".
في شعره كما المطر انسكابات لإيقاعاتها أنغام تمتد داخل الروح نشوانة لا تنتهي. فشعر فوّاز عيد يمتاز بغنائية موسيقية عالية، وفي مواضيعه عبق الموروث الشعبي والأسطوري والتاريخي، وهو إلى هذا لا ينأى عن الحياة اليومية فصوره الشعرية وخيالاته مزروعة بتلك التي أغنتها الحياة الدمشقية، والأكثر تلك المنتزعة بل والمشحونة بالمأساة الفلسطينية.
فالشاعر فوّاز عيد هو أحد شعراء فلسطين الذين ظهروا في الستينات لإشباع الحداثة الشعرية العربية التي بدأها روّاد حركة الشعر الحديث (قصيدة التفعيلة) في الخمسينات. كان الشعر الفلسطيني الحديث قد توغل في الحداثة. لقد كانت بدايات هذا الشاعر مهمة جداً إشكالية هذا الشاعر المقيم في دمشق منذ نكبة 1948 وحتى وفاته 1999، حيث اقتلع من وطنه، هي ذلك الغياب الكبير له في الفترة (1970-1984) بسبب البحث عن لقمة الخبز لأطفاله؛ فقد أصدر مجموعته الثالثة عام 1984. أما مجموعته الأولى (في شمسي دوار) فقد كان قد نشرها في العام 1963. وأما مجموعته الثانية (أعناق الجياد النافرة) فقد صدرت له في العام 1969. وقد ولدت هذه المجموعة ناضجة من الناحية الفنية، مما لفت الأنظار ليه. فعلى الرغم من أنه كغيره من شعراء مرحلته خاضوا تجربة الحداثة الشعرية إلا أنه كان المتميز والمتقدم على الكثيرين من أبناء جيله آنذاك.
