"الشعر الشعبي" أو "الزجل" وليد "الشعرية" أو اللغة العامية في آن ولئن كان الأندلسيون قد سبقوا اللبنانيين إلى الزجل قرضاً وتصنيفاً، فإنه من المعروف أن الشعب اللبناني يملك هذه الثروة الضخمة وهذه الفنون المتعددة من ألوان الشعر الشعبي. ولا شك أن الطبيعة اللبنانية الساحرة الغنية بالموسيقى الطبيعية وذكاء اللبناني الفطري، وحبّه للفنون عامة، وللشعر منها بنوع خاص، عوامل ساعدت هي الأخرى في تمايز اللبنانيين عن غيرهم بالإبداع في الشعر الشعبي.
وفي القرن التاسع عشر وأوائل القرن العشرين كثر شعراء الزجل وارتقت معانيه، وبدأت أوزانه وقوافيه تنتظم ومن أشهر شعراء هذه المرحلة رومانوس رعد حنيف، محمد سلطان، أمين الدمشقي، يوسف أبو وردة، وغيرهم... يجمع المؤلف في هذا الكتاب نخبة من روائع الزجل الذي اشتهر فيه اللبنانيون أمثال: فايز الحويك، سعد كرم، فؤاد عطاالله، عاصم برباري، كما يضم بين طياته توليفة هامة من المقطوعات الزجلية المقفاة، الموزونة والتي ألقيت في مناسبات متعددة وفي فترات مختلفة.
