قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: اللهم اجعلني أخشاك حتى كأني أراك أبداً حتى ألقاك, وأسعدني بتقواك ولا تشقني بمعصيتك, وخِر لي, في قضائك وبارك لي في قدرك, حتى لا أحب تعجيل ما أخرت, ولا تأخير ما عجلت, واجعل غنائي في نفسي, وأمتعني بسمعي وبصري, واجعلهما الوارث مني, وانصرني على من ظلمني, وأرني فيه ثأري, وأقر بذلك عيني. فالدعاء عبادة قائمة بذاتها, يعبر فيها العبد عن تذلله وافتقاره إلى مولاه وخالقه, والعبد مهما كان شأنه يبقى عبداً مفتقراً إلى من ذرأه وبرأه وشق سمعه وبصره. فلا دليل على صدق العبودية لله رب العالمين إلا الدعاء الخالص, فهو تعبير صادق عن كمال العبودية, يقول رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: الدعاء هو العبادة.
