ولا يقل الشعر الشعبي شأناً عن الشعر الفصيح في إلهاب المشاعر الوطنية والقومية، وفي تعبئة النفوس ضد الظلم والتسلط، ونقد الأوضاع الاجتماعية والسياسية الشاذة، فللكلمة فعلها وسحرها، إذا عبّرت بصدق عن مشاعر الشعب وتطلعاته.
وتهدف هذه الدراسة التي تقلب صفحاتها إلى تسليط الأضواء على الجوانب الوطنية والقومية والاجتماعية والعواطف الإنسانية في الأشعار والأغاني الشعبية، والتعريف بمجموعة من الشعراء الشعبيين الذين كانت لهم إسهامات مميزة في هذا الميدان، من خلال تحقيقات ومقابلات شخصية مع مجموعة كبيرة منهم والحصول على نماذج متنوعة من نتائجهم، نظراً لقلة المصادر والمراجع المنشورة والمطبوعة، ولعل أخذ الشواهد من المكان الذي تولد فيه، وتنتشر بين أوساط الجمهور خير دليل على صدقها وواقعيتها.
