للعدد خاصية مميزة، وسراً خفياً قد لا ندري كنهه، والله عزّ وجلّ ذكر الأعداد في كتابه العزيز بصورة جلية واضحة في كثير من آيات كتابه. وقد ضمن الله تعالى في كتابه الكريم أعداداً متنوعة كثيرة لا يستطيع كشف إعجازها وأسرارها إلا من كان ماهراً بتفسير القرآن الكريم كذلك أورد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في الحديث النبوي الشريف ذكر الأرقام في حديثه بشكل مستفيض. أما العارفون بالله والعلماء ومن حذا حذوهم فقد ذكروا الأعداد والأرقام في أحاديثهم ومؤلفاتهم وأقوالهم، وبنوا عليها الحقائق الكثيرة، واكتشفوا فيها أسراراً غريبة، فمنهم من تفنن في أساليب الدعوة إلى الله، وإعلاء كلمته، وشحذ الهمم على المعرفة المقربة إليه، وإسداء النصح بوسيلة الأرقام التي هي سهلة الحفظ، وسريعة الفهم.
جاء في كتاب الأشباه والنظائر لابن نجيم: "سأل ملك الروم المسلمين عن ثلاث مسائل، وأرسل مع رسوله مالاً عظيماً، فإن أجابوا فليعطهم المال، وإلا فليطلب الخراج: إن الرومي صعد المنبر، فقال له الإمام أبو حنيفة: هل أنت سائل؟ قال: نعم. قال: انزل فمكانك الأرض. فنزل وصعد أبو حنيفة المنبر: فقال الرومي: أي شيء كان قبل الله؟ فقال له أبو حنيفة: هل تعرف الواحد؟ قال: بلى قال: فأي شيء كان قبله؟ قال: لا شيء. قال: فكذلك الواحد الحقيقي لا شيء قبله. ثم قال الرومي: في أي جهة وجه الله؟ فقال له أبو حنيفة: إذا أوقدت السراج فإلى أي جهة وجه النور؟ قال: ذلك نور يستوي فيه كل الجهات. فقال أبو حنيفة: فكذلك نور الحق الدائم الباقي يستوي فيه كل الجهات. ثم سأل الرومي عن عمل الإله. فقال له أبو حنيفة: إذا كان مثلك على المنبر أنزله، وإذا كان مثل على الأرض رفعه".
وفي هذا الكتاب الكثير من هذه النوادر اللطيفة والمربية والمعلمة والهادفة. وهو كتاب لا يستغني عنه المعلم في تعليمه، ولا الواعظ في وعظه، ولا الكاتب في كتابته، ولا الخطيب في خطابته، ولا الشاعر في صنعته. وهو كتاب تربوي إلى حدّ كبير من خلال أسلوب جمع بين السلاسة والسهولة، يضع الأمور في نصابها بالاستشهاد بمواقف العلماء وأعمالهم وأقوالهم البليغة والشعراء وإبداعاتهم والأئمة ودررهم وهذه كلها تعبر عن الحقيقة بعبارات مختصرة حتى ينطبق عليها القول السائر: خير الكلام ما قلّ ودلّ.
