من العنوان "ماذا يصنع رجل في معطفي" نعرف أن الرجل هو ما يسبب القلق للكاتبة/ المرأة، لذلك، سعت إلى فك طلاسمه ورموزه التي يسبح بها روحه، وقراءة عالمه عن كثب، وخاصة في علاقته بالمرأة بقصد تفسير حالة التقرب من الأنثى في الحب، وفي الحياة بشكل عام وعلى مختلف الأصعدة.
وفي هذه المجموعة القصصية تترك نوال الجبر المرأة تتحدث عن نفسها، عن لوعتها، عن كوامنها بحريَة وتجعلها تتساوق مع الرغبات الكامنة داخلها، فتحضر كعاطفة أولاً ثم روحاً وجسداً ثانياً، وتقارن بين حالة الأنثى ومفهومها للحب وبين حالة الرجل ومفهومه للحب والعلاقة عموماً؛ فتدير حواراً بين الإثنين، تقول المرأة فيه: "مفهوم الحب هو: أن يرى أحدنا نفسه ذائبة كلياً في الآخر! وهو (الآخر) بذلك يعرف نفسه داخلنا. لا ينبغي أن نتعامل في الحب ومصاعبه حسب المقولات وقراءات الآخرين له. لا بد أن نؤمن باختلافنا في الحب لا يعني هذا أن تحبني لأنك هكذا أردتني!" أما بالنسبة للرجل: الحب يا آنستي لا يحتاج إلى قرارات كي يتكون . الحب يحتاج فقط إلى تلك حين يكون ويستمر ويكبر... فهمت؟!"... هذه المعادلة الصعبة نجد التعبير عنها في نصوص المجموعة مع بطلين استثنائيين تتكون منهما الحياة هما: رجل وإمرأة.
يضم الكتاب ما يقارب الثلاثون قصة قصيرة نذكر من عناوينها : "صلاتنا كانت شيئاً لامعاً!"، "زجاج في محيط تأملي"، "الآخر البعيد"، "الحلم مفاجأة النائم!!"/ "لها اسم الطائر الذي ستكون"، "وعشقي وجلالي"، "حول أنوثتي يحوم شيخ"...الخ.
