ما بين ماضٍ قاتم وحاضر قاسٍ ومستقبل مجهول، يحكي الشاعر "حسن البياتي" قصة العراق بكل ما عاناه أبناءه من قتل وتهجير ونفي وعزبة وبكم ووحدة وموت. فالمجموعة بكاملها تقول حكاية الإنسان والوطن، بلغة فنية تميزت بآليات صياغته على مستوى عال من الرهافة والإبداع؛ في محاولة لوصف الواقع بكل ما يشي به من دلالات ومحمولات وإشارات تلامس بعمق كينونة الإنسان العربي الباحث دوماً عن الذمان في عصر الحروب والدمار... في قصيدة من الديوان بعنوان [الهزيمة] يقول: "ما عادت الدنيا سوى شبح تغلفه الجريمه.../ عام مضى لكن ريحك يا هزيمه/ لمَا تزل تجتاح واقعنا المرير،/ عام مضى بين التبجح والغرور.../ وعبير أعواد البخور/ يندى بأنفاس الجريمه.../ عام مضى بين التضرع والدعاء: "يا داحياً أبواب خيبر، يا أمير المؤمنين!/ إن الغزاة يدنسون ويقتلون".
تضم المجموعة ما يقرب من أربعين قصيدة في الشعر العربي الحديث عبَر من خلالها الشاعر عن حالات وطنية وإنسانية شتى، نذكر منها "الوهم"، "الجمال"، "الإدارة"، "العطاء"، "الأصالة"، "العقوق"، "المكر –القط الكذوب"، "الاعجوبة العراقية"، "الشقيقات الثلاث"... الخ.
