ولد حسين كنعان في بوداي (قضاء بعلبك) عام ١٩٣٨.
نال شهادتي دكتوراه في القضايا الدولية والعلاقات الدولية من جامعات واشنطن (١٩٧١ و١٩٧٤).
درّس في الجامعات الاميركية (واشنطون وبالتيمور) ثم في الجامعة اللبنانية والجامعة الأميركية في بيروت.
من مؤسسي حركة المحرومين وأول رئيس للمكتب السياسي لحركة أمل (١٩٧٦-١٩٧٩).
عمل رئيسا لمجلس ادارة مجلس الجنوب (١٩٧٩-١٩٨٥) ونائبا اول لحاكم مصرف لبنان المركزي (١٩٨٥-١٩٩٠).
له مؤلفات عدة.
Book Description
يقول المؤرخ الهولندي يوهان هويزنغا: "إن الثقافة الإنسانية لا يمكن أن تُفهم إلاّ إذا أقررنا بأن الإنسان هو لاعب في كل الحلول، من صنع السلام إلى صنع الحرب". اللاعبون هم دول منطقة الشرق الأوسط وأميركا، واللعبة هي المفاوضات.
أما لبنان فمن مأساته أنه يعيش في منطقة الشرق الأوسط، وأنه يدفع ثمن الصراعات الإقليمية على أرضه، وثمن أخطاء اللعبة الدولية، دون أن يستطيع في ذلك شيئاً. وأما العرب فهم يحاولون الإنفتاح أو – على الأقل – التفاعل مع تحوّلات النظام الدولي الجديد.
وأما إسرائيل وأميركا فحليفان ينسّقان معاً: يستغلّ الرؤساء الأميركيون أصوات اليهود ودعمهم في الإنتخابات، ويستغلّ اليهود قدرتهم على التشكيك في كل من يتعاطى الشأن العام، فينالون ما يريدون، خصوصاً بعدما أصبحت أميركا القطب الأوحد، وبعدما تبنّت عمليّة السلام. إلا أن للرأي العامّ الأميركي والعالمي تأثيراً في مسار المفاوضات أو في وقف الحرب والإعتداءات، كما حصل بعد مجزرة قانا، ومع ذلك تمضي إسرائيل في لعب دور المراوغ في المفاوضات، فتستوحي من لاءات العرب السابقة: لا للصلح، لا للمفاوضات، لا للإعتراف، لاءات جديدة هي: لا للأرض مقابل السلام، لا للدولة الفلسطينية، لا للقدس، لا لشيء إلاّ السلام مقابل السلام!
هذا ما يتناوله الكتاب بالبحث العلمي الرصين، محلّلاً حركيّة الأحداث في لبنان والعالم.
