ولئن كانت هذه المدارس قد اتخذت من الدين الإسلامي مرجعيتها الأساسية وهدفها المنشود فإنها اختلفت في فهمه وقراءة نصوصه، واستخلاص النظرات التربوية منه، مما أدى إلى تمايزها بل وتصارعها في بعض الأحيان حتى قيل:"الفقهاء مجتهدو الإسلام، وعلماء الكلام مجتهدو الإيمان، والصوفية مجتهدو الإحسان". ومهما يكن من شأن هذا الاختلاف ، فإنه كان –في جوهره- تعبيراً عن سعة الدين الإسلامي الذي استوعب ما تولد عنه من تيارات ومذاهب وتوجهات ومشارب، ساهمت جميعها في بناء حضارة عربية إسلامية راقية.
ولا شك أن المدرسة الصوفية قد تميزت بتربيتها الروحية، والتي بجلت بوضوح في ما أبدعه أصحابها من طرق ومناهج مختلفة عما عرفته المدارس الأخرى، حيث " ركزت المدرستان: الفلسفية والكلامية على الفكر والتجريد بينما اشتغلت مدرسة الفقهاء بالأحكام وظاهر العبادات"
ويمكن تحديد مراتب الخطاب التربوي الصوفي في مرتبتين اثنتين: تتمثل أولهما في خطاب تربوي عام يتعلق بجملة القواعد الأخلاقية التي يحتاجها اي مسلم –مهما كان مشربه- لتحقيق مقامي الإسلام الإيمان. وهذا ما اشتركت فيه المدرسة الصوفية مع المدارس الأخرى. بينما تتمثل الثانية في خطاب تربوي خاص موجه لسالكي طريق التصوف الذين يتشوفون إلى تحقيق مقام الإحسان. وهذا ما تفردت به المدرسة الصوفية عن غيرها.
