أليكسي مكسيموفيتش بيشكوف، ويعرف بمكسيم غوركي (28 مارس 1868 - 18 يونيو 1936)، أديب وناشط سياسي ماركسي روسي، مؤسس مدرسة الواقعية الاشتراكية التي تجسد النظرة الماركسية للأدب حيث يرى أن الأدب مبني على النشاط الاقتصادي في نشأته ونموه وتطوره، وأنه يؤثر في المجتمع بقوته الخاصة، لذلك ينبغي توظيفه في خدمة المجتمع.
ولد في نجني نوفجراد عام 1868، وأصبح يتيم الأب والأم وهو في التاسعة من عمره، فتولت جدته تربيته، وكان لهذه الجدة أسلوب قصصي ممتاز، مما صقل مواهبه القصصية.
وبعد وفاة جدته تأثر لذلك تأثرأ كبيراً مما جعله يحاول الانتحار.
تعنى كلمة جوركى باللغة الروسية "المر" وقد اختارها الكاتب لقبا مستعارا له من واقع المرارة التي كان يعانى منها الشعب الروسى تحت الحكم القيصرى والتي شاهدها بعينه خلال المسيرة الطويلة التي قطعها بحثا عن القوت ، وقد انعكس هذا الواقع المرير يشكل واضح على كتاباته وبشكل خاص في رائعته "الأم".
أهم أعماله: - رواية الأم.
- رواية الطفولة.
- مسرحية الحضيض.
- قصيدة "انشودة نذير العاصفة".
- الطفولة 1913-1914 - الأعداء؛دراما؛1906 - جامعاتي 1923 بالإضافة للعديد من المسرحيات والقصص والمقالات.

"مكسيم جوركي" كاتب إنساني يرى النصر دائماً في جانب الخير وهو في ذلك ما يقرر الواقع ولا يتجنى، وجوركي يؤمن قبل كل شيء بالقوى الأولى، يؤمن بالحق والخير اللذين يطغيان على كل شرورها، وقد قوى فيه هذا الاعتقاد عندما شرع يخالط العمال في بلدته "نجني فورد" في عام 1902 وما بعده، وابتدأ يتصل بالمنظمات الثورية المحلية ويشارك في نشاطها.
في هذا العالم بدأ كل أدبه يتحول عن المشردين الذين طالما صور بصدق حياتهم التي شاركهم مرارتها. ويحل كتابات جوركي تنطق بالتجربة ولا تنقصها المعرفة، رغم أن جوركي لم تطأ قدمه دور العلم إلا مرة واحدة حين كان لا يزال في التاسعة ولكنه لم ينجح في دراسته وعانى الكثير من معاكسة التلاميذ والمدرسين أيضاً له فترك المدرسة ليعمل صبياً في محل لبيع الأحذية، ثم دخل مدرسته الكبرى... الحياة...!!. كتب جوركي ذكرياته عن حياته في كتب ثلاثة: "طفولة" و"خبرتي بالحياة"، "وجامعياتي" والكتاب الأخير هو الذي بين أيدينا. وفيه يتحدث جوركي عن حياته منذ صغره…
