فقه اللغة، درس لغوي يختلف عن معظم الدراسات اللغوية القديمة من حيث المادة، والمنهج، والمقصد لذلك نرى أن دراسة أي علم من العلوم اللغوية كالأصوات، والصرف، والدلالة، لا تسد مسد فقه اللغة، وإن كان معظم هذه العلوم أوسع مادة منه، ففقه اللغة يعطي أبرز ما في هذه العلوم ونحوها ضمن سياق واحد هو أقرب إلى مفهوم (فلسفة اللغة). وقد الفت كتب عدة في مجال (فقه اللغة) من لدن المحدثين، إلا أن هذه الكتب كانت مفتقرة جميعها إلى المنهج السديد إذ تداخلت مباحث فقه اللغة، وعلم اللغة في هذه الكتب، فلم يسلم كتاب من هذا الخلط قط.
والكتاب الذي بين يدينا جاء لسد هذه الثغرة، وهو يضم مباحث في فقه اللغة دونها كل من الدكتور "علي حسن مزيان" والدكتور "إبراهيم طاهر الشريف" مقسمين مادتها على بابين تناول الأول ما يأتي: "اللغة، والكلام، فقه اللغة وعلم اللغة، نشأة اللغة، اللغات السامية، الكتابات السامية، اللهجات العربية، الفصحى والعامية)، وشمل الباب الثاني المباحث الآتية: (قضية الإعراب، المعرب والدخيل، الاشتقاق، القياس، القراءات القرآنية).
