لقد شهد القرن العشرون حدوث ثورة علمية سلّحت الإنسان بتقنيات تسمح له أن ينافس الطبيعة المكوّنة، ويشاركها في إعادة تركيب الكائنات الحيّة؛ إن البيولوجيا، هي إحدى علوم الطبيعة التي تغزو حالياً حياة البشر، وما زالت تسعى على الدوام إلى إظهار القوانين الكيميائية والفيزيائية لعمل الكائنات وأنشتطها، حتى أن الإنسان إستطاع من خلال تقدم المعارف في مجال علوم الحياة، أن يكشف جوانب كثيرة من أسرار الحياة، وأن يتخذ لنفسه سلطاناً عظيماً يضعه اليوم في مصاف العمالقة الذين غذّوا خياله الميتولوجي.
لقد سعى المفكرون والفلاسفة إلى تحديد مصادر المعرفة الأخلاقية، بغية الوصول إلى يقين يؤكد على ما هو جيّد وما هو صحيح في تقييم للسلوك البشري، فلم يكن بين هذه المصادر أحكامٌ ثابتة، سوى الوصايا الدينية المنزلة، التي تعتبر وحدها الدائمة والقاطعة؛ أما الأحكام الأخلاقية في المجتمعات العلمانية فإنها متغيرة وقابلة للتجديد، كونها تواكب حركة الشعوب وتختلف بإختلاف الحياة العامة لديها! لذلك فإن التطور العلمي الإحيائي، قد فاجأ في كثير من القضايا الشائكة، الحكومات في هذه الدول الصناعية، مما أدّى إلى طلب مشاركة المجتمع في إيجاد الحلول، والإحتكام في كثير من القضايا الصعبة إلى الرأي العام.
لهذا وضع المؤلف نموذجاً عن معالجة القضايا الطارئة على حياة الإنسان، والإنسان العربي خاصة، فيؤكد على دور الفكر الرائد في زمن ظنّ العلماء بأن الفلسفة في حالة إحباط، وإن معارفهم وحدها قادرة على كشف الحقائق للإنسان، فيتخذون لذلك دور الخصم والحكم في الدفاع عن الكيان الإنساني، وعن الحريات؛ ولكي لا يبقى الإنسان في مجتمعنا محاصراً في دائرة المعارف الدينية المتعددة، والتي غالباً ما تتهمه بجرائم وخطايا مميتة لم يرتكبها، كإستعمال أساليب منع الحمل، ووضع حد لحياة محكومة بالعذابات، وإتقاء ولادة طفل مشوه...
من أجل ذلك كله، ولكي لا تبقى الدعوة إلى تجديد التجربة الأخلاقية حكراً على الدول الرائدة علمياً، تناول هذه الأحداث العلمية من الناحية الوجدانية، وطرح معاني القيَم المتعلقة بالحياة، في مجتمع تكثر فيه المعتقدات والمعارف، وينقصه تشريع صادق لما يصنعه الأطباء بطرق إستنسابية أو شخصانية.
