تحاول هذه الصفحات أن تدرس تاريخ الإحصاء بإيجاز دون الخوض في مسائله الرياضية والتاريخية الصرفة، بل تقدم عرضاً موجزاً لأسسه التاريخية ومنابعه الفكرية، التي قادت إلى تطوره بالصورة التي نعرفها اليوم، هذا من جانب ومن جانب آخر ترك اقترانه بالاحتمال أثراً فعالاً في نموه وتطوره، ومن ثم استقلاليته كمنهجية يحتذى بها، ومن دون الاحتمال يبقى الإحصاء مبتوراً بل مشوهاً إذا جاز التعبير، لذا جاء فصل القضايا الفلسفية للاحتمال بعداً أساسياً لتقصي أبعاد هذين المجالين.
يحتوي الكتاب على خمسة فصول وملاحق حيث تعالج الفصول الأربعة الأولى التطور التاريخي لعلمي الإحصاء والاحتمال بينما يناقش الفصل الأخير القضايا الفلسفية لكليهما وكذلك المدارس الفكرية للاحتمال. أما الملاحق فتحمل في طياتها استعراضاً تاريخياً وسرداً عن بعض قادة الفكر الإحصائي بالإضافة إلى مقتطفات لبعض مراسلات فيرما وباسكال التاريخية التي تمثل في حد ذاتها ولادة لفكرة الاحتمال ومن ثم المسار للإحصاء.
