دعا الإسلام إلى نبذ ما يوجب الفرقة والاختلاف بين المسلمين وحذر من العمل على شق وحدتهم ومفارقة جماعتهم، وقد وردت في ذلك آيات كثيرات. وقد كان من أوليات ما جاء به الإسلام الدعوة إليه برفق ولين وقول التي هي أحسن. كما أمرنا الله سبحانه وتعالى بأن نرجع إلى كتاب الله وسنّة رسوله الثابتة فيما تنازعنا عليه واختلفنا فيه، ولا سيما في المسائل الاعتقادية وأحكام الإيمان والكفر. إذ يجب عدم التسرع في إطلاق الأحكام المتعلقة بهما، حيث يؤدي ذلك أحياناً إلى إخراج طائفة أو فرقة من المسلمين من ربقة الإيمان. وفي ذلك خطورة على وحدة المسلمين وتفريق لجماعتهم وزرع الفتنة بينهم.
وفي هذا الكتاب يقدّم المؤلف دراسة فقهية شاملة للإيمان والكفر وأحكامهما في الإسلام، إذ يبيّن أولاً معنى الإسلام ومعنى الإيمان، ومعنى الشرك والكفر، وحيث اختلفت آراء المسلمين في بيان حقيقة الشرك والكفر وتعريف ماهيتها وتحديد دائرتها سعة وضيقاً.
