يعالج هذا لكتاب "عالم جامح، كيف تعيد العولمة تشكيل حيانا"، قضية العولمة والمخاطرة والتقليد والعائلة والديمقراطية من المنظور الفلسفي نفسه، ومؤلف هذا الكتاب "أنطوني جيدنز" هو واحد من أهم علماء الاجتماع في العصر الحالي، وهو مدير معهد لندن للاقتصاد وفي هذه الأيام غالباً ما يشار إليه كمستشار لرئيس الوزراء البريطاني توني بلير، كما أنه كان يستأثر بمشاورة الرئيس كلنتون.
إنّ ماهية العولمة وأمر حداثتها وقدمها موضوع يدور حول جدل عنيف، وهذا ما أناقشه في الفصل الأول، لأن الكثير من الأمور للأخرى تعتمد عليه. فالعولمة الآن تعيد تركيب الأنماط التي نعيش بموجبها، وهي تدار من الغرب وتحمل بصمات القدرة الاقتصادية والسياسية الأميركية، كما أنها تقترن بعدم المساواة الشديدة فيما يتعلق بالعواقب. ويمتد تأثير ذلك إلى الولايات المتحدة نفسها، كما يمتد إلى بقية الدول.
إن العولمة تؤثر أيضاً على الحياة اليومية للإنسان العادي بالطريقة نفسها التي تؤثر فيها على الأحداث العالمية. لهذا السبب يحتوي هذا الكتاب على فصل يتضمن الحديث عن الجنس والزواج والعائلة.
إن مناصري العولمة يشجعون هذا الاختلاط الثقافي، أما الأصوليون فهم يعدونه خطراً ومركباً، سواء في مجالات الدين أو القومية أو الهوية، فهم يلجؤون إلى تراث منقي ومجدّد، وغالباً ما يلجؤون إلى العنف.
علينا أن نزيد في ديمقراطية المؤسسات الحالية بشكل يستجيب لمتطلبات مرحلة العولمة. فإن لم نتمكن من أن نكون أسياداً لتاريخنا، فلا بد لنا من أن نجد الطرق المناسبة لإخضاع عالمنا الجامح هذا لسيطرتنا.
