يتضمن هذا الكتاب ثلاثة فصول تمثل عهود استوعبت حياة الأنصار، فمن رأى رسول الله منهم وتشرف بصحبته، ففي الفصل الأول بحث في حركة الأنصار في ظل عهد النبوة منذ أن بايعته وفودهم في مكة وحتى انتقال الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى الرفيق الأعلى، وهو عهد الإيثار والعطاء، واختص الفصل الثاني بما لاقاه الأنصار من وجوه الأثرة وألوانها من قبل المهاجرين، متضمناً كل الأحداث الكبرى ومواقف الأنصار منها حتى نهاية خلافة الإمام الحسن بن علي عليه السلام، وهو عهد الأثرة عموماً لما أصاب الأنصار فيه من الحرمان والإبعاد والغبن، بينما تكفّل الفصل الثالث بمتابعة خيوط السياسة الأموية إزاء الأنصار والمعاناة الشاملة التي خيّمت على كل مناحي حياتهم، والتي بلغت ذروتها في الإغارة على مدينة رسول الله بهدف إبادة الأنصار وأبنائهم في واقعة الحرّة زمن يزيد بن معاوية، فلم ينجو منهم إلا عدد يسير عاش مأساة أخرى في ظل الحكم المرواني الذي هو امتداد للعهد السفياني، وليس من المبالغة في شيء إذا قلنا أن هذه الحقبة تمثل عهد الثأر الأموي من الأنصار.
