دراسة عقَدية مقارنة تـتناول بيانَ مصطلح قرآني، هو (أصحاب النار) أو (أهل النار)، على مَن يُطلَق، وما هو مصير أصحابه. يتناول الكتاب بالبحث النصوص الشرعية من الآيات والأحاديث، مبـيَّـنةَ الدلالات، مع شواهد من كلام المفسِّرين والشرّاح.
ثم يتناول تقريرَ مذهب أهل السنة والجماعة من الأشاعرة والماتريدية في هذه القضية، وبيانَ دلائلهم فيها، ثم يشرح مذاهب الفرق الإسلامية الأخرى، ويوثقها من مصادرها القديمة والحديثة، ويقارن بينها، كالخوارج والإباضية والمرجئة والجهمية والمعتزلة والزيدية والشيعة الإمامية، على اختلاف اتجاهات تلك الفِرَق عبر العصور. ثم يتناول رأيين خطيرين في الموضوع هما: رأي الشيخ محيي الدين ابن العربي، ورأي الشيخ ابن تيمية، ويحرّرهما تحريراً وافياً ويبيّن مناحي الاتفاق والافتراق بينهما.
ويُعد هذا الكتاب أولَ دراسة جامعة لأطراف هذا الموضوع، ويتميّز بالرجوع إلى أقدم المصادر في توثيق الآراء والمذاهب، مع ربطها بالبحوث المعاصرة، ثم تناولها بالتحليل العميق والمناقشة، والإشارة إلى الأصول التي اعتمدت عليها كل فرقة في موقفها ورأيها، وتحرير بعض المباحث المهمة التي لم تـتوفّر على تحريرها أية دراساتٍ سابقة.
