لقد خلق الله الخلق على الفطرة, وأمرهم بتعظيمها, ووصف الدين بها في سياق حثه وأمره بإتباعه, فكانت الفطرة مأموراً بإتباعها, وحذر العباد من تغييرها مبيناً أن إتباعها هو سلوك للدين الذي ارتضاه, وجعله مستقيماً قيماً لجميع ما يحتاجه البشر في أمر دينهم ودنياهم, قال تعالى: (فأقم وجهك للدين حنيفاً فطرت الله التي فطر الناس عليها لا تبديل لخلق الله ذلك الدين القيم ولكن أكثر الناس لا يعلمون). وجاءت السنة النبوية بذلك فبينت أنهم على دين الفطرة منذ ولادتهم, فقد قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: (كل مولود يولد على الفطرة, فأبواه يهودانه أو ينصرانه أو يمجسانه, كمثل البهيمة تنتج البهيمة هل ترى فيها جدعاء). ومع هذا الحث على لزوم الفطرة وسلوك سبيلها, فقد اختلف العلماء من أهل السنة وغيرهم قديماً وحديثاً- في حقيقة هذه الفطرة, وبيان المراد بها إلى أقوال عدة ومذاهب مختلفة. وبذلك تناول هذا البحث أقوال الناس ومذاهبهم حول هذه الحقيقة. وكان من أهم المواضيع التي تناولها المؤلف: الفطرة عند أهل السنة والجماعة, الأدلة من الكتاب والسنة والعقل والواقع, أقوال أهل السنة في معنى الفطرة ومناقشتها وبيان الراجح منها, منزلة الفطرة والاستدلال بها, المخالفون لأهل السنة في الفطرة والرد عليهم, مذهب القدرية في الفطرة, مذهب المتكلمين في الفطرة, مذهب الفلاسفة وعلماء النفس في الفطرة, الميثاق وصلته بالفطرة, الميثاق في الكتاب والسنة وأقوال أهل العلم.
