بدأ موضوع تدريس المفاهيم يلعب دوراً جوهرياً في العملية التعليمية التعلمية خلال العقود القليلة الماضية، بعد أن ظهرت الجهود العلمية المتمثلة في مئات الدراسات والبحوث الميدانية من جانب المربين المهتمين بهذا العنصر المهمّ من عناصر محتوى المنهج المدرسي.
وقد طالب عدد من العلماء بالتركيز على تدريس المفاهيم، جنباً إلى جنب مع التعميمات والنظريات أو المبادئ، بدلاً من الإعتماد على الحقائق أو المعلومات وحفظها أو إسترجاعها من جانب المتعلمين، حيث تقلل المفاهيم من ضرورة إعادة التعلم، فما أن يتعلّم الطالب المفهوم حتى يستطيع تطبيقه مرّات ومرّات إلى عدد كبير من المواقف التعلمية دون الحاجة إلى تعلمه من جديد، كما تساهم المفاهيم في حلّ بعض صعوبات التعلم خلال إنتقال الطلاب من صف إلى آخر.
ورغم أن الكثير من الكتب الأجنبية وبعض الكتب العربية قد تناولت موضوع تدريس المفاهيم من جوانب مختلفة، إلاّ أن التركيز فيها قد إنصبّ على طرح الأفكار والنماذج من الناحية النظرية فقط، ولا يقلل هذا من قريب أو بعيد من قيمتها التربوية، ولكن يبقى أثرها محدوداً على فئة معينة من المتعلمين ما دامت لم تترجم إلى واقع المنهج المدرسي بميادينه أو مواده المختلفة.
ولا يبالغ المؤلفان مطلقاً إذا اعتبرا أن هذا المرجع هو الأول من نوعه في المكتبة العربية بل والعالمية الذي يضمّ أشهر نماذج تدريس المفاهيم مع تطبيق واقعي لأهمها على ميادين اللغة والرياضيات والعلوم والتربية الإجتماعية، حيث تعدى المؤلفان خطوة جمع المعارف والمعلومات المختلفة عن تدريس المفاهيم ونماذجها المختلفة، إلى تحضير خطط دراسية واقعية من المنهج المدرسي العربي ومن صفوف إبتدائية وإعدادية أو متوسطة في أربعة ميادين مهمة من ذلك المنهج وهي اللغة العربية والرياضيات والعلوم والتربية الإجتماعية، بعد تزويد تلك الدروس بالصور الملونة والأشكال والرسوم اللازمة.
