للحرية معانٍ مختلفة وأحياناً متناقضة تختلف باختلاف المذاهب والأنظمة الفلسفية والسياسية، ولا بد من القول أنّ الحديث عن الحرية، يبدو حديثاً في غير محله، إن لم يبحث علاقة الحرية بمفاهيم أخرى لحقيقة الإنسان ومكانته، ومصلحة الفرد والمجتمع، والحقوق العامة، وغيرها؛ سيما وأن لهذه المفاهيم معانٍ تختلف باختلاف المذاهب والمدارس الفكرية.
ومن الطبيعي أن يكون للحرية في النظم الدنيوية أو تلك التي تؤطر غايتها بإطار السعادة الدنيوية فقط معنى يتلاءم مع تصوراتها للمفاهيم السابقة، ومن الطبيعي أيضاً أن يكون لمفردة "الحرية" في النظام الذي يكرس تطلعاته وأهدافه لسعادة الناس الدنيوية وفوزهم الأخروي، معنى آخر ذو صلة وثيقة بسائر أجزاء وعناصر الرؤية العالمية لدى هذا النظام. ولا شك في أنّ الإسلام لا يمكن أن يلوذ بالصمت إزاء موضوع خطير كالحرية، ولا يتحدث عن معناها وحدودها. والهدف من هذا الكتاب، تسليط الأضواء على مختلف أبعاد الحرية، وجوانبها من وجهة نظر الفيلسوف والمفكر الإسلامي الكبير المطهري.
