فريدريك بول بولز (بالإنجليزية: Paul Bowles ) (30 ديسمبر 1910-18 نوفمبر 1999) هو مؤلف ومترجم أمريكي مغترب، قضى معظم حياته في المغرب، حيث استقر منذ سنة 1947 بطنجة، ولحقته زوجته جين بولز عام 1948، وباستثناء سنوات الخمسينات القرن الماضي حيث كان يقضي فصل الشتاء في سري لانكا (المعروفة آنذاك باسم سيلان)، فقد قضى 52 عاما المتبقية من حياته في طنجة.

لا شك أن هذه الرواية عمل إبداعي حمل بولز الى مصاف الكتاب الكبار. ويجمع النقاد في الغرب على أنها رائعة من روائع الأدب الإكزوتيكي. فهي تقدم المغرب العربي بأجوائه ومعالمه بكثير من الحب والإعجاب. لكن الإنسان الغربي بشخصيته وقيمه بقي محور الحدث, وبذلك جمع المؤلف بين الشخصية الغربية والمحيط الشرقي مغيباً العناصر الحية الأخرى. وتذكرنا الأجواء التي رسمها بولز بقصص ألف ليلة وليلة أو بلوحات المستشرقين التي تصور المجتمع المغربي في القرن التاسع عشر. إنه يقدم عالم الشرق كما يحلو للأوروبيين والأميركيين أن يروه. وهو يعترف بذلك, فقد ذكر مراراً أنه يكتب لهم أكثر مما يكتب للمغاربة. ومع ذلك تظهر كتابات بولز ارتباطاُ وثيقاً بالمكان وعناصره وجرأة في سبر أغوار الصحراء المغربية. لا نريد الإدعاء بأن هذه الرواية تمثل السيرة الذاتية لبول بولز لكننا, منذ اللحظة الأولى, نلمس تشابهاً كبيراً بينه وبين بطلي الرواية بورت وزوجته كيت. إذ تبدأ الرواية بحلم رآه بورت لا يتذكر تفاصيله, مثلما كان دافع بولز لزيارة المغرب وكتابة رواية عنه حلماً رآه في شبابه. كما أن بورت لم يكن سائحاً بالمعنى المألوف بل رحالة من طراز بولز نفسه. ويقول بولز في روايته إن السائح يستعجل العودة الى بلاده بعد أسابيع قليلة, أما الرحالة فلا ينتمي الى أي مكان أكثر من انتمائه الى المكان الذي يليه, وهوينتقل ببطء على فترات زمنية تمتد لسنوات من مكان الى مكان آخر من العالم. وقد كان توغل أبطال الرواية في صحراء المغرب ارتحالاً في العوالم النفسية لكل منهم في الوقت نفسه.
