إن الثورة التربوية في العالم الآن هي ثورة لتنمية تفكير المتعلم وتفعيله بكل الوسائل المتاحة والممكنة بغض النظر عن التخصص الذي يدرس فيه، بمعنى أن تنمية تفكير المتعلم أصبحت من الأهداف الرئيسة للعملية التعليمية، وما دام الهدف على هذه الدرجة من الأهمية توجب على المعنيين والقائمين بعملية التدريس من معلمين ومدرسين وأساتذة جامعات الإنتباه والتركيز على ذلك ليتم خلق وإنتاج المتعلم المفكر والمبدع الذي يكون خير نواة لبناء وطنه.
لذلك، تناول المؤلف موضوع التفكير الإبداعي في كتابه هذا علّه يفعل عملية التفكير لدى الطلبة، وليسهم في تنمية قدراتهم العقلية والعلمية وليعزز ثقافتهم في كل المجالات.
وعليه فقد وضع الكتاب في خمسة فصول تضمنت مباحث عدة، ففي الفصل الأول تناول بيان مفهوم التفكير ومستوياته وخصائصه وتطرق إلى العلاقة بينه وبين واللغة وأهمية التدريب على التفكير، أما الفصل الثاني فقد تطرق فيه إلى مفهوم الإبداع وتطوره وآراء علماء النفس في تفسير ظاهرة الإبداع ومن ثم تناول النظريات التي حاولت تفسيره وتعرض إلى بيان تسع منها.
أما الفصل الثالث فتناول فيه توضيح مراحل الفكرة الإبداعية وبيان مصطلحات الإختراع والإكتشاف والموهبة والتفوق والإبداع والعبقرية والعلاقة بين تلك المفاهيم ومن ثم خصائص الشخص الموهوب، وفي الفصل الرابع تحدث عن علاقة الإبداع بالتعليم العام وأساليب تنميته في المرحلة الأساسية والثانوية.
وفي الفصل الخامس تناول دراسة مهارات التفكير الإبداعي في نماذج فنية عالمية تنوعت بين تصوير ونحت لعصور النهضة الأوروبية (الرينيسانس والباروك والركوكو) وأنموذجين للمبدع فان كوخ.
