يفهم من كلمة غزل كل شعر يصف فيه صاحبه لواعج حبه، ولكن جاء في لسان العرب في معنى هذه الكلمة: "أن الغزل هو حديث الفتيان والفتيات" و"أن الغزل هو اللهو مع النساء". وأما عن نشأته فإنه ومن خلال إلقاء لمحة سريعة على تاريخ الغزل في مراحل الشعر العربي الأولى والثانية، نجد بأن الغزل هو أسبق أغراض الشعر حيث وفي هذا الكتاب بحث يتناول فيه المؤلف المدارس الشعرية الغزلية تألفت ضمن فتري الشعر الجاهلي والأموي، والتي صنفها المؤلف ضمن نوعين من الغزل وذلك تبعاً أولاً: هدف الشاعر في المرأة، ثانياً: أسلوب الشاعر. هكذا ميز المؤلف المدرسة الغزلية، حيث ذكر مؤلف كل مدرسة ذاكراً قوانينها في الأسلوب والأهداف التي سار عليها المتقدمون بعده، مبيناً بعد ذلك أهم شعراء كل مدرسة. وقد سبق ذلك دراسة للمؤلف استعرض فيها الشعر في العصرين الجاهلي والأموي.
