إنَّ شهيدَ الدار رضي الله عنه وأرضاه ليس في حاجةٍ إلى من يَذُبُّ عنه أو يعتذر، لأن الله تعالى يتولاه وجميع المؤمنين العاملين المخلصين، كيف لا وقد قال فيه المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم: "اللهم أرض عن عثمان فإنِّي راضٍ عنه" وهو المُلَقَّبُ بذي النورين ومن المُبَشّرين بالجنة، وشهدت له الأمةُ في بيعتها له بالخلافة، وهو الذي بذل ماله دفاعاً عنها عندما ألمَّتُ بها الخُطوبُ وعَضَّتْها السّنون، ويكفيه في هذا قول النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بعد أنْ جَهَّزَ جيشَ العُسرة: "ما ضَرّ عثمان ما عملَ بعدَ اليوم"، وهو الذي فداها بنفسه عندما أوقدت الدَّهماء نارَ الفتنة.
وفي هذا الكتاب سار المؤلف على منهج المحدّثين في دراسة الروايات والأخبار التي تعرّضت للفتنة، ودرسها سنداً ومتناً، ولم يكتفي بورودها في كتب السير والتاريخ أو بعض كتب الحديث، وقد اعتمد على الأخبار الصحيحة التي وردت في الصحيحين البخاري ومسلم.
