تنقسم الرياضيات البحتة إلى عدة فروع يعتبر الجبر من أهمها وأكثرها تجريداً، والجبر بدوره ينقسم إلى عدة فروع يعتبر الجبر الخطى من أهمها وأكثرها تطبيقاً، وعادة تصنف المادة الرياضية التي تدرس بالجبر الخطى إلى ثلاث نظريات رئيسة هي: نظرية المصفوفات، نظرية الفضاءات المتجهة ونظرية الصيغ الجبرية.
ولكثير من مسائل الجبر الخطي طبيعة خاصة حيث يمكن صياغة كل منها كمسألة في نطاق كل نظرية من نظريات الجبر الخطي الثلاث، وتجدر الإشارة إلى أنه حينما تصاغ إحدى مسائل الجبر الخطي بلغة نظرية الفضاءات المتجهة فإن المسألة تأخذ عندئذ طابعاً هندسياً يساعد كثيراً على توقع الحل والوصول إليه.
يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى عرض مبادئ الجبر الخطي بالمستوى الذي يجعله صالحاً لأن يكون كتاباً دراسياً لطلبة الجامعات من رياضيين وفيزيائيين ومهندسين، وأن يكون مرجعاً لغيرهم من طلبة الجامعات والمعاهد العليا بعد أن تعددت تطبيقات الجبر الخطي بصفة عامة والمصفوفات بصفة خاصة في فروع العلم المختلفة مثل الإحتمالات، البرمجة الخطية، نظرية القرارات، التأمين والإقتصاد.
ويتكون الكتاب من خمسة أبواب حيث خصص الباب الأول للمصفوفات والباب الثالث للفضاءات المتجهة والباب الخامس للقيم المميزة والمتجهات المميزة ويتضمن عرضاً للصيغ التربيعية الحقيقية كنمط خاص من الصيغ الجبرية؛ أما الباب الثاني فقد خصص للمحددات ويحوى الخواص البسيطة للمحددات لإستخدامها في إيجاد معكوس مصفوفة A مربعة من درجة n بواسطة المصفوفة المرافقة A adj للمصفوفة A.
وأما الباب الرابع فقد خصص للتحويلات الخطية والمعادلات الخطية وفيه تستخدم التحويلات الخطية لإيجاد حلول نظام من المعادلات الخطية في عدة مجاهيل، ويحتوي كل باب من أبواب الكتاب الخمسة على عدد كاف من الأمثلة المحلولة، كما يوجد بنهايته تمارين على بنوده المختلفة، وقد ذيل الكتاب بأجوبة التمارين وثبت للمصطلحات الرياضية التي وردت به باللغتين الإنجليزية والعربية.
