كان الجبر الحديث ولا يزال واحداً من مواضيع الرياضيات المهمة والأساسية التي لا يمكن أن يخلو منها أي منهج لطلبة الرياضيات، وقد ازدادت أهميته يوماً بعد آخر ليس لطلبة الرياضيات وحسب وإنما لطلبة العلوم والتربية والكثير من الاختصاصات الأخرى. لذلك فإن الجبر إضافة لكونه مادة رياضية تساهم في تطوير القدرة على التفكير والإبداع فإنه مادة أساسية لطلبة العلوم التطبيقية الأخرى.
يعد الجبر الخطي الذي هو أحد فروع الجبر الحديث أداة ضرورية لدراسة مواضيع مختلفة مثل الفيزياء والكيمياء والاقتصاد والإحصاء وعلم الاجتماع وغيرها من العلوم وقد أصبح الجبر الخطي في السنوات الأخيرة يشكل جزءاً أساسياً من الخلفية الرياضية المطلوبة في كثير من العلوم.
يمكن استخدام هذا الكتاب كمقرر منهجي لطلبة العلوم والتربية وكمصدر مهم للعلوم الأخرى، ومن هذا كان التوجه للإسهام بهذا الجهد المتواضع نضعه بين أيدي الطلبة ولرفد المكتبة العربية باضافة جديدة. يتألف هذا الكتاب من ثمانية فصول يشمل كل فصل على أمثلة مختلفة وتمارين متنوعة.
يتضمن الفصل الأول المعادلات الخطية وطرق حلها وجزء كبير من خواصها إضافة لدراسة المصفوفات وخواصها الجبرية المهمة.
الفصل الثاني، يتناول دراسة المحددات وطرق إيجادها.
الفصل الثالث يتناول دراسة المتجهات في فضاء البعد الثاني وفضاء البعد الثالث وبشيء من التفصيل لما درسه الطالب حول مفاهيم المستقيمات والمستويات.
يبحث الفصل الرابع فضاء المتجهات الاقليدية والتحويلات الخطية من Rn إلى Rm ودراسة خواصها.
يغطي الفصل الخامس مفاهيم فضاء المتجهات العام الحقيقي.
أما الفصل السادس فهو يتعامل مع مفهوم فضاء الضرب الداخلي مع دراسة بعض من خواصه الهندسية.
يتعلق الفصل السابع بدراسة القيم الذاتية والمتجهات الذاتية المرافقة لها وكذلك دراسة أقطره المصفوفات.
وأخيراً يتعامل الفصل الثامن مع التحويلات الخطية لفضاء المتجهات العام ومصفوفات التحويلات الخطية.
