كُتبت نصوص هذا الكتاب في فترات مختلفة. وما يجمع بينها يتمثل في مدى ما يتسم به العام من دلالة شخصية في كثير من الأحيان، ومدى ما في الخاص من دلالة عامة تتجاوز حدود التجربة الفردية في أحيان أخرى، ليتسم مرحلة معينة بينهما. كانت الكتابة أقرب إلى التفكير بصوت مرتفع، وإلى تأمل للزمن، أكثر مما هي قراءة موضوعية ومحايدة للواقع.
وللزمن، هنا، يفتقر إلى التسلسل المنطقي، كما يحدث في أحلام النوم واليقظة. ولعل في هذه الحركة المتقطعة، وغير المتوقّعة، ما يجعل العلاقة بالزمن محاولة للقبض على المعنى، كما يتجلى في الواقع المعاش، ملاحظة مسبقة، بل سلسلة من الاستجابات في لحظات متفاوتة الحدة والكثافة، وفي ظل ظروف نفسية وسياسية، واجتماعية مختلفة، وربما متناقضة. ولم يكن المعنى في حالات كثيرة في صورة أفكار مجرّدة، أو تجارب ذات كثافة خاصة بل حقق وجوده المتشظي، من خلال أشخاص تركوا في القلب والذاكرة، بعض ما اتسم به وجودهم في الدنيا من بلاغة الحضور.
