هذا الكتاب نمط فريد في التأليف, يجمع بين فن التراجم, وبين أدب الترسل شعراً ونثراً, في زمن معين, وأماكن محددة, يشكل المؤلف قطب دائرة هذا الكتاب. فمنه تصدر المكاتبات, وإليه تعود, في قالب من أسلوب كتاب الإنشاء في العصر المملوكي. وتأتي أيضاً أهميته من كونه متمماً للكتابين العظيمين: الوافي بالوفيات, وأعيان العصر, فهو رديف كامل لهما. إليه يحتاجان, وبه يكتملان. هذا بالإضافة للقصائد التي احتواها, والرسائل النثرية التي لا توجد في سواه. كما يظهر واضحاً في هذا الكتاب إعجاب الصفدي برجالات آل السبكي, فقد ترجم لسبعة فضلاء منهم. ولم يتبع المحقق منهجاً معيناً معروفاً في التحقيق, وإنما كان يعمل على طريقة: الشيء بالشيء يذكر. فكلما مر ببيت من الشعر يقول: يذكرني هذا بقول فلان- ثم يسرد بيتاً أو أبياتاً- أو يقول لعله من قول فلان.
