يروي الجاحظ حكاية امرأة إعرابية اسمها (غنية): "وذلك أنها كان لها ولد شديد العرامة، كثير التلفت للناس، مع ضعف أسر، ودقة عظم، فواثب مرة فتى من الأعراب، فقطع الفتى أنفه، وأخذت غنية دية أنفه، فحسنت حالها بعد فقر مدقع، ثم واثب آخر، فقطع أذنه، فأخذت الدية، فزادت دية أذنه في المال وحسن الحال، ثم واثب بعد ذلك آخر فقطع شفته، فلما رأت ما قد صار عندها من الإبل والمتاع والكسب بجوارح ابنها، حسن رأيها فيه.
