"في القاهرة وفي أحد أحيائها فتاة ذات جمال فتّان منفتح للحب والغرام، تواجه مصيرها بعد فقدان حبيبها الذي مات قتيلاً أمام بصرها. وفي أركان البيت الذي تعيش فيه تمضي حياتها منفردة بين جدران صغيرة في حيّ شعبي يجمعها بأناس طيّبين يتحلون بالكرم رغم ضيق حالهم. وبينما هي جالسة في شرفة غرفتها سارحة في همها المأساوي وقد أشرق لونها الأبيض الممزوج بالاحمرار وعيناها الزرقاوان وعقلها الناضج وجسمها الجميل المتناسق وشعرها الناعم الطويل... ونتعمق في ملامحها قليلاً فتلقاها مليئة بالحنان الإنساني، ثم فجأة ينقلب الحنان الإنساني إلى حقد، فتراها متلذذة بشعور الانتقام المليء بالدماء والمكبت في صدرها منتقمة لحبيبها".
هكذا يفتتح الروائي أحداث روايته على هذا المشهد المفعم بالتصوير الحيّ الذي يحيل المعاني صوراً تتحرك ضمن قالب روائي أخاذ يشد القارئ إلى نهاية الرواية.
-القاصُّ البارع هو الذي يستطيع أن يتجرّد من نفسه وأن يكون شخصاً غير شخصه حتى يكاد ينكره عارفوه، وكذلك كان شأن هذا الكاتب في روايتيه "الانتقام والزمن" و"أم تغادر الحياة" فقد أجاد في كل منهما وبلغ من الإبداع الغاية التي لا غاية وراءها، حتى رأيت العيون شاخصة والأنفاس معلقة والدموع مرسلة، وحتى خيّل إليّ أني أسمع خفقان القلوب بين الجوانح.
-وكما أن ميزان الفضل في التصوير أن تكون الصورة والاصل كالشيء الواحد، كذلك ميزان الفضل في الكتابة أن يكون المكتوب في الطرس خيال المكنون في النفس.
-تلك هي ميزة رياض العرفج في روايتيه، تتخيّله مرآة نقيّة صافية قد ارتسمت فيها صورة نفس الكاتب جلية واضحة.
