البحث في المعتقدات الدينية، مهما كان رصيناً، لا يخلو من المخاطرة، إذ من السهل أن يساء فهم الغرض المعرفي فيه لارتباطه بمقدّسات ومسلمات لا يجوز لغير رجال الدين، كما يبدو، التطرق إليها أو إثارة التساؤلات حولها. غير أن مكرم سعيد حنوش يتجاوز كل ذلك وينشر هذه المقالات لإيمانه بأنه ما زال هناك متسع، لحرية الرأي والعقيدة، وحرية الكتابة والتعبير. وهذه المقالات كتبت في الأصل كملاحظات أو ردود على بعض ما خطه يراع المطران جورج خضر في بعض أسبوعياته في جريدة "النهار"، ومنها نقد لكتاب المطران جورج صليبا القيّم "مائدة إنطاكية" ومنها تعليق على مقالات المفكر الأردني الأستاذ "حسن التل" التي تنشر أسبوعياً في جريدة "الدستور"، ومنها كذك نقد لكتاب الدكتور سهيل فرح "العلمنة المعاصرة". فهذه المقالات جميعاً هي مناقشات فكرية يتفق المؤلف مع أصحابها في حرصهم على الكلمة الطيبة والتمسك بالفضيلة والنهي عن الرذيلة، وهو لا يخالفهم في ذلك ولا في بعض منه، وإنما يناقشهم في الأفكار والآراء والحقائق التاريخية أو العلمية التي يجدها أو لا يجدها فيما يكتبون وينشرون.
